Varec Biogas

Varec (VApor RECovery Specialty Company) began business in the 1930's at its manufacturing plant in Compton, California. Varec was there in the infancy stage of the biogas market in the early 1950's. From the onset, Varec's focus was to deliver Biogas Handling products that suited customers' specific requirements, even if it meant creating the product off the drawing board. Varec initially sold direct to end-users and in the 1970's instituted a Sales Representative Network that catered to Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plants. A select number of Sales Representatives in the United States helped Varec acquire approximately 90% installed base from the 2,500 Wastewater Treatment Plants that utilize Anaerobic Digesters for Biosolids Treatment built between the mid-60's to late 70's. Today, Varec Biogas is 100% dedicated in providing total solutions to the biogas market. In February, 2003, Westech Industrial Inc. acquired the biogas portion of the Varec business from Tyco Valves and Controls, LP Inc.

Varec Biogas 180 Double Port Regulator

The Varec family of 180 Series Double Port Pressure Regulators have been designed for use on vapor recovery systems where sensitive control at low pressures is required. Models include the 180, 181, 186 and 187 regulators for upstream and down-stream control. Flow curves are provided to assist you in selecting the proper size for your vapor recovery requirements. In addition, Varec’s applications engineering staff and factory trained representatives are always available to assist you.

The 180 and 186 Series Regulators are designed for up-stream control for regulating gas in lines going from tanks to vapor recovery compressors. Upstream pressure sensed through control line piping is applied to one side of the diaphragm. The pressure acts against the weighted lever arm, moving the diaphragm linkage. The movement positions the valve to regulate gas flow. As the pressure upstream of the valve increases, the linkage opens the valve, allowing a greater flow capacity. As the pressure is relieved, the valve throttles towards its closed position. The 181 and 187 Series Regulators are designed for down-stream control. Downstream pressure sensed through the control line piping is applied to one side of the diaphragm. The pressure acts against the weighted lever arm, moving the diaphragm linkage. The movement positions the valve to regulate gas flow. As the pressure downstream of the valve decreases, the linkage opens the valve, causing an increase in flow capacity. As the pressure increases, the valve throttles towards its closed position.

The family of 180 Series Regulators utilizes a large diaphragm and a unique ?double port? design to achieve a sensitivity of less than 5%. Set pressure is controlled by a weighted lever for settings below 1? (25 mm) WC and combination weighted lever and spring for settings up to 20? (50 mm) WC. The design of the double port regulator adds a dampening effect to the valves action, allowing it to smoothly seek the set pressure, unlike single port regulators which typically exhibit a pop acting tendency. The rotary linkage design eliminates friction and drag which are often encountered in regulators with packing seals. Diaphragm chamber and valve body are completely isolated so there is no possibility of leakage between the two. Because the valve can be affected by temperature changes, it is not recommended for gas tight shut off applications.
